Political Idolatry

The first commandment enjoins that nothing replace God as our first love, adoration and worship: “Thou shalt have no other gods before me” (Exodus 20:3). The Bible commands that we “Keep ourselves from idolatry” (1st John 5:21). The Bible speaks of those who “worshiped the created rather than the creator” (Romans 1:18-25). Sometimes people worship other people (the created) rather than God (the creator).
A few years ago, a video was put up on YouTube where a father and mother watched with joy as their 5 year-old son prayed down on his knees to “President Obama.” The child was praying as if the President was a savior and mentioned special favors be granted to his people.
As we are about to elect a new President, people are lining up and taking sides. There are always those who go to extremes in their adoration of their candidate. Recently, I watched a video on Face Book where a group of women were singing Hillary Clinton’s praises. They were singing praises “literally.” In fact, they had taken a gospel song and replaced the name of “Jesus” with “Hillary”!
The Bible tell us that idolaters will have their part in the “Lake which burns with fire and brimstone! “…Idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death” (Revelation 21:8).
Let us all take care that we do not elevate anyone, whether it be a politician, a preacher, a rock or country music singer, movie star, etc., above God almighty. Let us examine ourselves and make sure our adoration and devotion is truly to the One True God in Heaven (II Corinthians 13:5).
